Where the Boats Go
Where the Boats Go (2022, rev. 2024) for horn and piano was commissioned by Cay Cummings and is dedicated to Marina Krol, our fellow horn player and good friend who left this world too soon. This work is an attempt to process grief while celebrating Marina’s life, conjuring her bright spirit. Where the Boats Go quotes the composer’s solo unaccompanied horn work Prophecy, which was written for and premiered by Marina, while the piece’s title is an allusion to Marina’s Instagram handle, a reference to her name that also evokes her love of nature. The rhythmic material of Where the Boats Go is also a reference to waves, opening with the sonic imagery of a small dock bobbing along with the tide. Thank you to Cay for her love of new music for horn, and much gratitude to Brett Hodge for his guidance and support during the editing process of this work.
